CD PROJEKT RED and ESA Team Up to Put The Witcher in Space

We’ve walked a long Path with The Witcher. Our debut game launched almost two decades ago now, back when we were practically unknown. But it’s the journey we’ve been on since that makes this moment so incredible and humbling. Earlier this month we welcomed Polish astronaut Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski to our Headquarters to celebrate a very special collaboration between CD PROJEKT RED and the European Space Agency — one that took The Witcher to outer space.

Uznański-Wiśniewski, who’s the second Polish astronaut in history, took two witcher medallions to the International Space Station during Ignis Mission in July 2025. He photographed both the Wolf medallion worn by original saga protagonist Geralt of Rivia and the Lynx medallion worn by The Witcher 4 protagonist Ciri aboard the space station.

“We’ve come a long way over the years, but seeing our Witcher medallions reach outer space is something else,” said Michał Nowakowski, our Joint CEO. “This is a huge honor, first of all, and we’re thankful to our collaboration with the European Space Agency for making it happen. It’s proof that Polish creativity and ambition can, quite literally, reach the stars.”

This all became possible after some REDs had the opportunity to chat with members of ESA last year, and we found each other to have similar ideals. Our mission is to create revolutionary role-playing games, with memorable stories, that inspire gamers, and ESA looks to inspire Europe by igniting curiosity and passion for space among its citizens. We both share a philosophy of curiosity, a fascination with exploration, an emphasis on imagination, and the drive to go beyond limits.

The medallions representing Geralt, Ciri, and The Witcher are incredible, but to me they also represent all our efforts, creativity, and ambition too.

That’s why, for The Witcher 4 Executive Producer Małgorzata Mitręga, the collaboration was about much more than putting the medallions in space. “When I first heard about the project I thought, ‘wow, not even the sky is the limit for us,’” she said. “Our goal is to create revolutionary games and timeless stories and it’s amazing to see these have such an impact. The medallions representing Geralt, Ciri, and The Witcher are incredible, but to me they also represent all our efforts, creativity, and ambition too.”

The Wolf medallion is the very same many of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt players own themselves, while the Lynx medallion was 3D printed and hand painted by our Art Director Paweł Mielniczuk. He’d bumped into one of the REDs who had met the ESA employees at gamescom, who shared their desire to collaborate. Mielniczuk, meanwhile, had just finished finalizing the design of Ciri’s Lynx medallion in The Witcher 4, and wanted to show it off.

“We put two and two together, and that’s how the idea was born,” he said. “Until the very end I didn’t believe it would work; it all seemed too abstract. But it was an incredible adventure, and I still can’t believe that our Witcher medallions, the icons of our games, ended up in outer space. As a huge fan of astronomy and a space technology enthusiast, I’m extremely proud of this fact.”

Our REDs were able to share this interest in and appreciation for the project directly with Uznański-Wiśniewski when he visited our Headquarters in Warsaw. After showing him around our campus, we sat down with him to talk about the collaboration and simply what it’s like to visit outer space. Hosted in our cinema, the meeting gave our REDs a chance to listen in and ask whatever questions came to mind. It was an incredible opportunity, and we’re grateful he took the time to visit.

The Witcher reminds us that every frontier, whether on Earth or beyond, begins with the courage to dream of what’s next.

Uznański-Wiśniewski had the following to say: “No matter where I trained for my mission, everyone I spoke to with an interest in space, sci-fi, fantasy, and so on already knew about Poland — because of The Witcher. As the Wolf and Lynx medallions drifted in orbit, I saw more than symbols — I saw imagination made real. The Witcher reminds us that every frontier, whether on Earth or beyond, begins with the courage to dream of what’s next.”

A wonderful work of fantasy from Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, developed into a video game series by a Polish developer, and propelled by the creativity and brilliance of a Polish astronaut, combined to create something literally out of this world. Having mementos from our video games reach outer space, too, reminds us just how much of an impact our stories can have, and we’re more determined than ever to deliver more of these to our players. It’s an incredible moment of reflection, and testament to how far one can go when on the right Path.
